This multimillion-pound venture, marking our first foray into the region, contributes to protecting Jakarta, a city perennially threatened by floods. Aiming to enhance drainage capabilities, the £94 million project, funded by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, allocated £23 million for the construction of a new pumping station at Sentiong.
Engineering Precision
The order comprised eight SAF160.05.22 pumpsets, five of which were designated for Sentiong. Initiated in March 2022, the delivery, installation, and commissioning of these colossal 1600mm diameter, 25-ton pumps adhered to a stringent schedule, with final completion scheduled for Autumn 2023. As of now, all Kamal pumps and four out of the five Sentiong pumps have been successfully commissioned, with the last pump en route by sea freight, set for final commissioning in mid-October.
This intricate project showcases remarkable cross-company collaboration. Bedford Pumps designed and manufactured the pumps across sites in southeast and southwest England, with the end user, PT Trico Wana, receiving the vital flood mitigation support through Hidrostal's local partner, Mectron Engineering PTE Ltd.
Fortifying Jakarta Against Rising Waters
The axial flow pumps, the largest of their kind in Southeast Asia, represent a significant milestone in our manufacturing history. Operating at 700 kW, they provide unparalleled flood protection to Jakarta, a city witnessing a surge in population, currently standing at 30 million. The environmental and social challenges, exacerbated by rapid urbanization and Jakarta's lowland delta location, underscore the critical need for flood mitigation projects.
Addressing Critical Needs
With an estimated 40% of Jakarta below sea level, a figure projected to reach 95% by 2050, the consequences of inaction would be dire. Each pump, capable of handling 10,000 liters per second of brackish river water, at a 5m head, ensures the lowest total cost of ownership, aligning with Hidrostal's core values of sustainability and environmental protection.
Collaborative Success
Albert Hadianto, Export Sales General Manager of Mectron Engineering PTE Ltd, hails the project as a landmark installation in the region. The pumps, meticulously inspected and tested, are not only meeting their duty but surpassing market benchmarks, promising enhanced life, lower maintenance costs, and improved solids handling.
This successful installation stands as a testament to the collaborative spirit between Hidrostal, Bedford Pumps, Avonmouth Engineering Services, and Mectron Engineering PTE Ltd. The project's impact goes beyond flood mitigation—it sets the stage for continued cooperation and unity in addressing the pressing challenges faced by Southeast Asia. As Jakarta's flood-prone landscape continues to transform, this endeavor demonstrates our commitment to providing solutions that safeguard communities and the environment.
