The original Screw Centrifugal Impeller

Hidrostal is the inventor of the screw centrifugal impeller and is totally dedicated to its development and improvement. For more than 60 years, Hidrostal have conducted a continuous research and development programme resulting in a technology advantage in handling difficult materials. This has led to a family of pumps being developed with variations of the screw centrifugal impeller to solve specific pumping problems.

A new invention and a new company in Peru

The story of the Hidrostal enterprise begins in Lima, themcapital of the Andean State of Peru. The company allowed the young Swiss entrepreneur to apply his extraordinary talent as an inventor. This opportunity enabled Stähle to develop an innovative pump that turned out to be a godsend for the Peruvian commercial fishing industry.

The Hidrostal enterprise flourishes

Martin Stähle founded the company Hidrostal SA on 25 May 1959 together with Wolfgang Spittler, a businessman from Stuttgart and Philippe Mennel, also from Switzerland. The company specialised in the manufacturing of pumps, and given the favourable demand for pumps at the time, it quickly succeeded on the market, and considerably expanded its workforce within just a few years.

After a few years Hidrostal produced several thousand pumps a year, with an increasing number of its orders coming from abroad as it succeeded in continually expanding into new markets. In addition to the commercial fishing industry, the pumps proved to be well suited to other industries and sectors, including industrial wastewater treatment.

The founding of a «subsidiary» in Neunkirch

New laws gave rise to a trend toward the nationalisation of industries. Trade unions were given a greater say in the management of companies. The owners of Hidrostal were suddenly afraid of losing everything they had worked so hard for. In response to this emergency, Stähle developed a plan for relocating the company to his native country. While the operation in Lima was not to be given up unnecessarily, which is why Wolfgang Spittler was to remain in Lima in the capacity of a managing director, Stähle was determined for reasons of simple prudence to hedge his bets by relocating at least a part of the business to Switzerland.

On 12 September 1967, Hidrostal AG was officially inaugurated in Neunkirch with a plant tour followed by a celebration at the «Gemeindehaus» restaurant. In giving their celebratory speeches, the enguests expressed their appreciation of the fact that an «enterprise of global significance», as they called it, had established a subsidiary in Neunkirch.

Martin Stähle himself spent around half of the year in Lima until the middle of the 1970s in order to support Wolfgang Spittler and to keep the plant there operating at a good clip. During this time, the Neunkirch enterprise enjoyed a period of steady growth. In 1970, just three years after the start of operations, the company’s incoming orders were valued at more than CHF 1 million and its sales around CHF 700,000. In the same year, the Neunkirch plant was readied for the production of key pump components, which went hand in hand with an increase in the number of employees to 22.

Even after the turn of the millennium, further important expansion steps were undertaken by the company. Hidrostal produces up to 800 tonnes of cast iron, spheroidal iron, stainless steel and duplex stainless steel a year by now.

Years of solid growth

After the expiry of the first patents, Hidrostal pumps were soon copied by the competition. This forced Martin Stähle to continuously develop his products, to remain a few steps ahead of the competition and to regularly register new patents. For instance, one extraordinary invention was the pre-rotation system, which enabled the continuous, automatic regulation of conveyance loads for  pumping stations and was first put to use at a pumping station in Luterbach in the Canton of Solothurn in 1974.

The beginning of a new era

Company founder Martin Stähle remained active in the company virtually until his death in March 2008 at the age of 86. He also presided over the Board of Directors of Hidrostal Holding to the very end. Nowadays, the top management responsibility lies in the hands of his descendants. The Hidrostal group remains rock-solid and employs more than 1,000 staff at 20 sites around the world.

Our values

Since its foundation in 1957 by Martin Stähle in Peru, Hidrostal has been an independent, owner-operated company. After the death of the founder in 2008, his sons took over the family business.

We believe that independence is a prerequisite to achieve our goals and that self-financing is the basis of independence. We are able to take business decisions freely in the interests of our customers, employees and the company.

We achieve high quality products thanks to qualified and motivated employees, the best possible materials and intensive quality control. That is also why we invest in exceptional in-house manufacturing. Moreover, when developing our products we always aim for high serviceability criteria, such as lifespan, cost effectiveness and, of course, energy efficiency. Hidrostal pumps enjoy an exceptionally long lifespan and are very low maintenance.

Environmental protection and sustainability are central to Hidrostal's philosophy. This is reflected not just in strategies and corporate decisions, but rather can also be seen in the guiding values implemented by the owners and Hidrostal employees. Hidrostal products should be used for a meaningful purpose, contribute towards human health and protect the environment.
